We LOVE Ali Cat Designs! Ali is an 11-year old local artist who makes jewelry from recycled materials. She’s a total sweetheart! She donates 20% of her sales to the Westie Rescue where she and her family adopted their dog. How incredible is that!? We’ve got her pop-tab bracelets and recycled scrabble tile necklaces in the store.

Today we also got a few more Gus Fink stuffed keychains, and these hilarious Horse “Lubies”

Well, we may not have one of the fabulous Horse mania horses to boast, but we do have Big Lex! And he is, of course, blue.

This week we also got these EcoGen magnetic bins… they’re 100% biodegradable! When properly composted, they’ll be gone in 6-9 months. How cool is that!?

They’re perfect for the home or office – or locker! We can hardly believe its already about to be back-to-school season!

World Craft: Africa

Our newest jewelry comes to us from Eldoret, Kenya.

Artisans at the Imani Workshop fashion jewelry from a number of different recycled and handmade materials.

Imani Workshops is a revenue-generating social enterprise focused on producing high quality crafts by HIV+ artisans in western Kenya. It gives these people a second chance at getting their life back on track while, at the same time, promoting economic self-sufficiency. Learn more about the Imani Workshop here.

Our new flip flop jewelry is the coolest! The story behind it is even more amazing – it’s made from the thousands of flip flops that wash ashore on Africa’s coast at the tip of the Lamu Archipelago. There, they litter beaches and pose a threat to wildlife, especially sea turtles.

UniquEco pays Lamu women and teenagers a fair living wage to collect flip flops from the beach. The flip flops are then delivered to Nairobi, where UniquEco’s 20 full time employees convert the flip flops into sculptures, jewelry, key rings and other small gifts.

We love these eco-conscious, fair trade pieces – and what conversation starters they are! Read more about flip flop project here.
